Municipality of Kalamaria

The Municipality of Kalamaria constitutes the third largest in population municipality of the urban area of Thessaloniki, but also the 3nd in Northern Greece and 10th in entire Greece. According to the 2021 census the residents of the Municipality are 92238 (43.224 men 49.014 women), however the actual number is estimated to 120.000 by the municipality services. The geographical area of the Municipality is 7.2 sq.km and covers the areas of Aretsou, Karampournaki, Finikas, Ag. Ioannis, Ag. Panteleimonas and Ag. Stilianos.. The economic development of Kalamaria is mainly supported by tourism and recreation activities, particularly those in the coastal area, which is extended to 6,5 km and more specifically the beach of Aretsou, a highly developed centre of recreation. Wholesale and retail trade and commerce also constitute an important economic activity with important commercial sites installed in the historical centre as well as the municipality region. In total, trade and commerce activities, business services, as well as hotel, dining and recreation businesses assemble around 25% of the economic activity of the Municipality. 68% of economically active residents of Municipality are employees, 14,5% are employers and 11%self-employed. The Municipality of Kalamaria presents certain contradictions. Some of its areas are inhabited by high income families with high level of education (27,62% of residents hold University degrees and 32,6% of secondary education), while other areas face important socio-economic problems. Certain areas of the Municipality present high real estate value, i.e. Aretsou, Karampournaki, while others lack adequate infrastructures, i.e. Finikas, Ag. Ioannis, Ag. Panteleimonas, Ag. Stilianos.
